The West of England Partnership's vision to improve transport across the region

Work completed to date

Below is a list of the current schemes completed to date as part of the Greater Bristol Bus Network improvements.

Corridor 1 – M32 into Bristol
Last summer a dedicated bus lane was delivered on Newfoundland Way after junction 3 of the M32. This provides time savings for buses approaching the city centre, improving punctuality and reliability.

Corridor 2 – A4018 From Cribbs Causeway to Bristol City Centre via Henbury and Westbury
An extra bus lane has been completed along Lysander Road near Cribbs Causeway to prevent the buses from being caught up in the traffic entering The Mall.

First has introduced new buses along this corridor with 30 brand new buses for services 1 and 54 (Cribbs Causeway to Broomhill and Stockwood). These buses feature low floor access, more comfortable seating and engines designed to reduce Co2 emissions.

Corridor 3 – A4 from Bath to Bristol City Centre via Keynsham
Work has been completed on the A4 at Hicks Gate. This work has improved the junction to give buses priority and also to help prevent accidents and tackle congestion.

Also on the A4 at Twerton Fork, the traffic signals have been upgraded in readiness for a bus detector system that will change the lights to green as buses are approaching. The signals operate more efficiently and reduce queuing times for all motorists.

Work has also been completed at the junction of Sandy Park Road and St Phillips Causeway to improve pedestrian crossing facilities and conditions for cyclists and motorists.

Corridor 4 – From Cribbs Causeway to Bristol City Centre via Bradley Stoke, Abbey Wood and Horfield
In Bradley Stoke and Patchway new bus shelters and raised kerbs have been installed to improve access.

Filton Avenue in the northbound (heading towards Bristol Parkway) the road has been widened for a new bus lane.

The Filton Avenue/Lockleaze Road junction has been improved with new traffic signals to allow buses to trigger a green light, plus advanced stop lines for cyclists.

A new bus only lane has been finished at New Road, Filton saving time for buses.

A part-time new bus lane has been installed on part of the A38 (Gloucester Road) northbound in two sections from the Little Stoke junction to the Aztec West roundabout enabling buses to avoid northbound traffic queues during the rush hour.

An additional lane for general traffic has been installed on the Aztec West roundabout to provide additional capacity for traffic heading right towards Bradley Stoke Way or Woodlands Lane.

Also as part of the scheme the pedestrian crossing on the approach to the Aztec West roundabout is improved to include facilities for cyclists and a new cycle lane on the southbound section of the A38 (Gloucester Road) from the Aztec West roundabout to Manor Grove, including improved cycle signage.

At Great Stoke Way, Filton, the road was widened to accomodate a new bus lane and an additional left turn lane for general traffic on the approach to the Abbey Wood roundabout.  The pedestrian crossing was relocated closer to the new bus stop, just outside Sainsburys improving pedestrian access.

Corridor 5 – A432 from Yate/Chipping Sodbury into Bristol
Work has been completed on Fishponds and Stapleton Roads to install new fibre optic cabling to improve control of the traffic signals.

Corridor 7 – A4174 Ring Road from Emersons Green to Cribbs Causeway via UWE, Abbey Wood and Filton
The westbound slip roads to Hambrook and Frenchay have been lengthened, to reduce the amount of queuing traffic in these lanes lessening congestion at the junction.

On junction 1 M32/A4174 roundabout an extra lane has been added between the slip roads on and off the M32 northbound. The extra lane increased the amount of traffic which is able to use the roundabout and should help ease congestion particularly during peak hours.

The Abbey Wood roundabout has been expanded to increase capacity for general traffic. In addition special traffic signals have been installed to detect the buses and provide priority for them.

Corridor 8 – A370 Weston-super-Mare to Bristol City Centre
On the A370 Locking Road the traffic signals have been upgraded to give priority to buses by allowing signals to change to green when a bus approaches.

Improvements to Baytree Road roundabout will also enhance pedestrian facilities. Bus stop improvements are currently being progressed along the A370. This includes Yatton, Claverham, Long Ashton, Flax Bourton, Brockley, Cleeve, Congresbury, Hewish and Locking Road.

A bus lane has been installed on the westbound approach to junction 21 of the M5 on the A370, operational during peak hours, to avoid queues and delays. A new east bound cycle way has also been put in.

On the A370 at Plimsoll Bridge, an upgrade of the traffic signals has been completed to reduce congestion.

A new bus lane has been completed on the A370 in Congresbury, north of the junction with the B3133 (Smallway).  As part of the scheme, the existing 30mph speed limit will has been extended throughout Congresbury, an off-carriageway cycle track for north-bound cyclists and a 'puffin' crossing to improve pedestrian access in the area.
